How To Be Confusing

With the recent release of a major MMORPG (Star Wars: The Old Republic, if you've been living under a rock), we'd like to remind our visitors that it's perfectly fine to upload images from MMORPGs other than WoW. Yes, the website is named WoW Bash, and that's confusing. But it so happened that we have also registered mmobash.com, and are in the process of upgrading the code of the website to support multiple games (and languages). We expect to release that new version of the website within a month or two (it's not that we are lazy, but we do play MMOs instead of coding).

We'll be releasing a list of the new features soon.

WoW Bash Facebook page

Apparently every website is supposed to have a Facebook page nowadays. That's fine, we set one up! Show your support and become a fan!

A storm is coming

We'll be moving the whole server (that means WoW Bash, this blog, and a couple of other sites) to a new host in the coming days, which might of course cause some outages. Sorry about that, we'll do our best to minimize the downtime.

On another note, we are working a new version of WoW Bash. More than a new version, it'll be a whole new website, using a new technology (ASP.NET MVC), supporting multiple games and multiple languages. And much more cool stuff is on the way. By the way, if you're a web designer, jQuery and/or C# developer and want to be part of the project, please send me an email.

New daily visits record for WoW Bash

Yesterday WoW Bash broke its new all-time daily visit record : 11,533 visitors came to the website ! On an average day, the website sees around 7,500 visitors. So thanks everyone, especially the folks from the SomethingAwful Forums and Dual Boxing.com, who for some reasons both decided to provide a lot of visits to us the same day.

Moderately annoyed

Like any website allowing comments, WoW Bash has got its fair share of trolls. We have been quite relaxed on the moderation side for now. Maybe too relaxed, because we started receiving emails pointing out specific users (I'm looking at you, FjantZ) were abusing the amazing anonymity Internet provides. Well, just so you know, we decided that if we decide to ban you, you will not have access to the website at all. We prefer lose some advertising money than allowing you to visit the website.

WoW Bash RSS feed relocated

As a consequence of the addition of images in the RSS feed, the said feed will now contain advertisement. This means we had to relocated the feed to a new URI, which you can reach here. The old feed has not been completely removed, but has been replaced with a redirection to the new URI. It is recommended that you update your feed aggregator with the new address.

Some updates on WoW Bash

People who use the RSS feed of WoW Bash will be delighted to learn, if they haven't noticed by themselves, that you can now see the images directly from the feed! That means you won't even have to come to WoW Bash to see your daily WoW chat porn. You will obviously still need to visit the website to vote and post comments. As a side effect, though, that means I will add some advertisement in the feed because, whatdayaknow, bandwidth doesn't pay itself.

Just for the kicks, here are some stats about the first two weeks of August. Checkout the bandwidth, and don't choke yourself!

WoW Bash move in progress

The title says it all, really. The WoW Bash move is in progress. The files and database have been imported, the DNS changed, so now we just need to wait a few hours for everybody's Internet Service Provider to register the new IP adress of www.wowbash.com. If you see a "maintenance" message on this URL, that means your ISP has not updated its DNS case yet. If you see the regular WoW Bash, you're good.

Update #1: The move is complete, and everything went fine.

Update #2: Well apprently I was too quick when I said that' everything went fine'. The quotes and double quotes in the comments are showing with escaping characters. It will be fixed later this week.

Update #3: The problem above should be fixed, as well as the issue with the RSS stream. If you find any other unexpected bug on the website, make sure to contact me.

WoW Bash is moving. No, really.

Alright, so as you can see, the moving of WoW Bash has been slightly delayed. Most of the technical difficulties have been fixed, so I'm hoping to actually move tomorrow, or the day after tomorrow. Not that you will see much of a difference, this is mostly a backend technical improvements.

WoW Bash is moving

WoW Bash will be moved to a new server in the coming days. Maybe even today. We are tweaking things here and there, and once we are confident everything is fine, the website will be moved (and then all hell will break lose, as anybody who carefuly planned a server move before will tell you - it never goes as planned). If you see something's broken, please bear with us for a couple of days. It will also be required to update the DNS entries, so it will take some time, once we switched, for all the ISP to be up-to-date with the new IP adress of WoW Bash. If you see a message saying you are on the old WoW Bash server, it's because your ISP is not up-to-date yet, and you just have to wait.

This post will be updated as we go.

Coming on WoW Bash

It's been a while since I posted what we have planned for WoW Bash. So here goes a list of upcoming features, in no particular order. Also, keep in mind none of this is set in stone, and everything is subject to change.
  • People will be able to display only the languages of their choosing. For only English entries are shown, even though it's possible to upload in other languages.
  • Fix a bug where the whole page is reloaded when you rate an entry.
  • Add a quote system in the comments, so you can insult each others more conveniently.
  • Add some WYSIWYG buttons in the comment box (bold, italic, and so on).
  • Weekly newsletter with the 10 best rated entries of the week.
Feel free to contact me if you can think of a killer feature not listed here and you feel is critical to add to the website.

Welcome to this blog

For a long time, it was not easy to know what the administrators of Folke had in mind. We really didn't have much to say then, but we do now. This is the reason this blog has been created.

But what is Folke, you say? For now it's not much. It is the name we chose to put all our websites under one banner. Folke, and I doubt you knew that, is the short version of Scandinavian names, and by itself it means "people". Because, we want to build websites for the people (no, we are not based in China). For now we don't have much websites. Well, we have only one website really, WoW Bash. But trust me, there are a lot of them at various stage of development.

This blog will be used, at least for a while, as the main tool to communicate to our user base. This is where you will learn what's in development, this is where you will learn that we opened a new website, this is where you can contact us. So add the RSS feed into your favorite reader, and do not hesitate to post your feedback.
